Transfermarkt responded to the corona crisis with a worldwide market value drop for the majority of players. Footballers who were born in 1998 or later are devalued by 10 percent, everyone else - up to a lower limit of EUR 300,000, by 20 percent. The Premier League suffers the most with its market value taking a hit of EUR 1.83 billion, followed by La Liga (1.16 billion), Serie A (1.03 billion) and Bundesliga (90.36 million).

"The stock market prices have plummeted, numerous clubs could face bankruptcy and transfer planning has come to a standstill due to the many uncertainties at most clubs. It is currently hard to imagine that transfer prices will continue to rise in the foreseeable future as in previous years, "Transfermarkt founder Matthias Seidel explains the flat-rate average of market values.

The top three Indian football leagues collectively suffer a market value loss of EUR 4.76 millions. But before we go deeper, it must be mentioned that the fall in market value of Indian football is governed by the foreign players. Sunil Chhetri is the only Indian that commands a market value of over EUR 300K. This indicates that Indian players are not affected by the downgrade.

Indian Super League is the biggest downgrade as its market value plunged by EUR 4.43 millions. The reason is because of the collective downgrade of forty-seven foreign players and Sunil Chhetri that commands a market value of over EUR 300K.

I-League meanwhile falls by EUR 0.33 millions as it has only four players that surpass the EUR 300K benchmark. Katsumi Yusa, Willis Plaza, Sandro Rodriguez and Borja Gomez's downgrade resulted in the market value fall of Chennai City FC, Churchill Brothers FC and East Bengal. All the other I-League clubs and the I-League 2nd division clubs remained unaffected, thanks to the low MV of foreign players in the league.

Among the ISL clubs, ATK has to bear the brunt as it has six foreigners with market value of over EUR 500K. Their collective downgrade resulted in ATK dropping its value by EUR 0.7 million to EUR 5.39 millions. This drop at 11.56% is the maximum by an Indian club. FC Goa follows with a devaluation from EUR 5.32 millions to EUR 4.78 millions, courtesy of five foreign players with market value above EUR 300K. The devaluation of all other clubs in ISL ranges from 6.28% (Bengaluru FC) to 10.37% (Northeast United FC).

Community and football industry agree: Strong impact on transfers

Transfermarkt has gathered voices in advance in the community as well as in the football industry about the effects of the corona crisis. In a survey carried out in the market value analysis, more than 70 percent stated that they expected a decline in market values as a consequence - almost half of the participants locate this at 20 to 30 percent. In a survey conducted by TM with more than 300 representatives of the industry from over 50 countries, more than 70 percent said that a strong impact on the transfer process can be expected.

The market value drop in Indian league is minuscule compared to the top leagues. But that doesn’t mean Indian Football will stay immune to the crisis that the world football is going through or will see shortly. Eventually, it will have severe repercussion on the domestic players and that’s when the real pinch shall be felt.
