Newcastle United are going to step up their interest in Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips and hope a loan deal can be agreed swiftly once the January transfer window opens. The midfielder is viewed as a top priority for Eddie Howe’s team

Newcastle have not made a bid for any player on the winter shopping list, but their interest in Phillips is long-standing.

They have not yet agreed the terms of a deal with either City or the player, but would like to open talks as soon as possible.

Newcastle United are understood to be in talks with Manchester City over a possible loan move for Kalvin Phillips - but face stiff competition to sign the England midfielder.

Eddie Howe played down suggestions that a loan deal was close earlier this month with City's preferred option to offload the ex-Leeds man in a cash deal. Last season's treble winners and the recently crowned world club champions want £40million for the midfielder's services.

Chronicle Live understands that even a loan deal until the end of the season would cost Newcastle a staggering £7.5million.

As things stand, the deal that is on offer from Manchester City to sign Kalvin Phillips on loan for the rest of the season is off as it is not a good one for Newcastle United.

That is the view within St James’ Park. After weeks of conversations, the Newcastle hierarchy do not think signing Phillips makes financial sense. Not on the terms currently available to them. The loan fee is too high and talk of there being an obligation to buy in the summer does not sit well with them either.

That does not mean the deal is dead or talks cannot resume, but it needs to be revived and City have not budged yet.
